Further Information
In this section are brief descriptions of projects that I'm working on or that interest me. Additionally, I have included a few links to some resources elsewhere on the web.
About This Site and Its Author
Parts of the current web site date from 2003, although there was similar content online earlier. There have been various incarnations of this site over the years, with this latest version going online in April 2009.
I am a graphic designer by trade but have been fascinated by the molluscs of British Columbia, Canada, since a very young age. Beginning around 1990, I have studied terrestrial molluscs of the province and more recently have almost exclusively focused on the terrestrial fauna.
- I've done extensive fieldwork around British Columbia, including on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, the Queen Charlottes, along the Cassiar Highway, along Highway 16 and around Smithers (where I live), and in the Peace River, Cariboo and Kootenay regions.
- I've recently collaborated with Fred Schueler and Aleta Karstad of Bishops Mills Natural History Centre and in 2008 helped in fieldwork in Ontario that included a trip to Manitoulin Island. This was part of the Identifying Land Snails and Slugs in Canada: Introduced Species and Native Genera project.
While living in Victoria, I volunteered at the Royal BC Museum (beginning 1998) where I mostly identified and helped curate specimens. I later becoming a research associate and participated in field surveys with museum staff.
In 2004 my book, Land Snails of British Columbia, was published; the idea for the project was begun in 1994 or 1995 and was expedited by my association with the Royal BC Museum. A list of my other publications is available on this site.
I maintain comprehensive, but compact, reference collection of terrestrial molluscs, mostly from British Columbia, but also from other places. I'm always willing to share my data with those interested. A substantial amount of additional material that I collected on museum-sponsored trips has been deposited in the Invertebrate Zoology Collection of the Royal BC Museum (RBCM). For data on these collections, contact the Museum.
I am currently one of the co-chairs of the Molluscs Species Specialist Subcommittee of COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada). My term ends December 2010.
